Staying Connected and Staying Sane With This Side UP! Family
Hello again and welcome to the start of another week. We hope your family is hanging in there together whether you’re going to school in person, online, or fully at home.
Something to Do:
We had a great time with the 19 families who joined us for our first Virtual Family Connection Night on Saturday, August 22nd! If you missed it, don’t forget to like and follow us on Facebook to see when the next event will be!
We’re just as sad as anyone about the State Fair of Texas being cancelled but everyone knows the food is the best part and the good news is you can still get your corny dog, funnel cake, and lemonade fix! Grab your masks and your family and head to the Fletchers Pop-Up from 3:00-8:00 pm on August 29th at HTeaO in Plano!
The Biodiversity Education Center in Coppell is moving its Eco-Explorer Program outside! Drop by the visitor center to pick up a free activity kit to use while exploring the trails. Themes change weekly and this week kids will learn all about Microworlds! Visit the BEC Website here to get all the details!
Something to Make:
Get your kids in the kitchen to make some healthy back to school snacks! These Apple Energy Bites are a hit for our whole family and fun for kids to help make!
INGREDIENTS
1 c. dried apples, chopped
6 pitted Medjool dates
1 tbsp. honey
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. freshly ground nutmeg
Kosher salt
1/2 c. walnuts, toasted
DIRECTIONS
In a food processor, puree dried apples, dates, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt until almost smooth. Add walnuts and pulse to incorporate. Firmly roll into 1-in. balls. Refrigerate at least 2 hours and up to 5 days.
Something to Discuss:
We’ve mentioned having family meetings or discussing things as a family but we’ve gotten a few questions on what a family meeting is and how to run one! We found this wonderful article from Roots of Action that is FULL of resources. There is even a helpful infographic that we got permission to share here.
As always, please feel free to comment below or shoot us an email at info@thissideupfamily.org if you have suggestions or questions for our next issue! Don’t forget to tag us @thissideupfamily on Facebook or @thissideupfamilytx on Instagram if you try any of the ideas we share here. We know this is a tough time for many and we’re here for you!
